Despite the area of high pressure, there was a mix of clouds and clear skies over Iowa. Areas with clear patches had temperatures drop into the single digits above zero to low teens while temperatures were a few degrees warmer under the cloud cover. Light southerly winds did develop over western Iowa after midnight resulting in slowing rising temperatures. Today will be a bit warmer than the past several days with high temperatures in the upper 20s northeast to the mid to upper 30s southwest. The wind will increasing today and become breezy from the south at 15 to 20 mph with gusts over 25 mph. Tonight and beyond: Low temperatures tonight will be in the 20s. A strong cold front will reach northern Iowa by late Wednesday morning and elsewhere during the afternoon. While the high temperatures on Wednesday are warmer in the 30s and 40s, falling temperatures will follow the cold front. In addition, gusty winds in the morning may become strong in the wake of the cold front as well with gusts over 45 mph possible. These gusty winds will persist into Wednesday evening before gradually diminishing after midnight and into Thursday. Very cold wind chills of zero to 15 below zero are forecast for Thursday morning as actual temperatures drop into the single digits above zero.
