NGAK88 PAFC 172047 HCMAFC HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL COORDINATION MESSAGE ALASKA-PACIFIC RIVER FORECAST CENTER NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ANCHORAGE AK 1219 PM AKDT Sat Aug 17 2024 --------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTACT: Kyle VanPeursem 907-266-5161 907-350-9219 (CELL PHONE AFTER 5 PM) LOCATION/KNOWN FLOOD AREA (KFA)*: Lower Kuskokwim, Akiak down to the mouth PRODUCT TYPE: Warning EXPIRATION TIME: Sunday night PRIMARY CAUSE: Storm Surge BASIS: A strong storm system will track just to the north of the Y-K Delta on Sunday. Strong SW winds and associated up river storm surge will correspond closely to Sunday's high tide at lower Kuskokwim communities, leading to very high water levels, rapid bank erosion, and flooding. IMPACTS: Residents reported flooding and rapid bank erosion during Friday and Saturday's high tide at Akiak, Napakiak, Kasigluk, and Tuntutuliak. At Napakiak, a village elder reported the bank in front of the school was eroding rapidly and was only about 6 ft from the structure. Water during Friday and Saturday's high tide had inundated most low spots in the village, including the low spot in the road to the dump. Water levels are reported to be higher than during breakup flooding this May. A resident in Kasigluk reported water was encroaching on low lying residences. Water levels there were the same as seen during this year's breakup, and only a few inches below that during Merbock. In Tuntutuliak, a resident reports the village has been flooding for the past 4 days. Based on tidal and storm surge forecasts, river levels will be the highest during Sunday's high tide. At Bethel, water levels at the Brown's Slough gage are expected to approach flood stage at 8.5' Sunday afternoon, still lower than seen during Merbock, where the gage crested at 9.48'. $$
